Acer negundo, known as the Box Elder, is a fast growing tree most notable for its resistance to Honey Fungus.
It thrives on most soils but is also tolerant of clay and can withstand limited exposure to waterlogged ground once established.
Introduced from America, this tough tree has compound leaves like an Ash which, for a Maple, is rather unique.
Acer negundo produces a broad and spreading habit at maturity so is best suited to large gardens or parkland.
Don’t let its common name of Box Elder put you off, it doesn’t sucker!
Mature height: 12-17m
