Cotton and canvas have played their roles in the tote bag industry for several decades now, but people are still confused by these two terms and frequently mistake them or each other.  The major difference between the two is that cotton is actually referred to the material, and canvas is referred to the woven technique.

Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective capsule, around the seeds of cotton plants of the genus Gossypium. It decomposes after prolonged exposure to temperatures of 150˚C or over, and burns into flames readily on fire. so cotton is degradable and the perfect option to serve as an eco bag material.

Canvas is an extremely heavy-duty plain-woven fabric for which sturdiness is required. Modern canvas is usually made of cotton or linen, although historically speaking, it was made from hemp. It differs from other heavy cotton fabrics, such as denim, in being plain weave rather than twill weave.
