The Integrative Design Process (IDP) is based on Factor Ten Engineering principles. It can be used in master planning developments, townships, cities and regions – or to make a single building run more efficiently. IDP cuts costs but dispels the myth that being green and sustainable is ‘costly’.
Capital expense (CAPEX) is reduced at the outset, as precious natural resources such as energy and water are conserved at their source. Operational expense (OPEX) is reduced as IDP reduces waste and converts what’s left into useful products, such as feedstock and fuel. IDP also optimises efficiency at every level.
Factor Ten Engineering (10xE) assists engineers and architects to attack resource-intensive design problems. Examples are manufacturing/industrial processes and facilities using whole-system or holistic principles. Rather than a rigid formula, 10xE is a set of ideas for shaping the design space and design approaches within it.
The IDP approach is meant for those purchasing or approving design services, as well as design practitioners and those developing a master plan. CRX facilitates the exchange of expertise by and between the design team and consultants, and provides priority-rated solutions. The approach allows solutions to be presented from conceptual design to construction, right through to day-to-day operations.
10xE currently offers design principles and a growing set of case studies over several projects. 10xE is pioneered by the Rocky Mountain Institute.
