Going Green with Gypsum

The word gypsum means chalk or plaster in Greek and has been used for more than 10,000 years to construct and decorate habitats.

In essence, gypsum is a soft, rock-like mineral which is made of calcium sulfate dehydrate that can be found in the earth's crust. Because it is non-toxic, inert and harmless to both the surrounding environment and the people occupying it, gypsum has become a vital element to many areas of our day-to-day lives.

Furthermore, gypsum is indoor air-quality friendly in accordance with the ASTM D5-116 Standard and is naturally fire resistant which makes it ideal for indoor construction.

Gypsum in general can be used as:

a dietary source or an ingredient in flour, bread, ice cream, tofu, blue cheese, canned vegetables, beer and other types of food for human consumption

a modeling material for tooth restorations

a surgical and orthopedic cast

a color additive for drugs and cosmetics
