We are a carbon capture company; our bi-product is high performing and healthy homes!
We are passionate about building with hempcrete for two simple reasons, firstly it has huge environmental benefits, and secondly it’s ability to wrap your home in a naturally insulating breathable blanket.
Philosophy/ Inspiration
We passionately believe building materials should be good for your health, good for the planet’s health and perform extremely well.
The inspiration for creating the Hemp Block Company came from listening to two separate features on the radio. The first was on Radio Five Live, which was talking about how to reduce the amount of carbon currently in the atmosphere, and specifically creating machines that capture carbon (which hemp does naturally) and the other item was on Radio 2, discussing the current housing shortage in the UK. The answer to us was obvious, why not build more properties using hempcrete.
Having worked with hempcrete for a number of years we have now decided to create the Hemp Block Company to promote hempcrete to a wider audience. Hempcrete blocks are the most accessible and easiest to use form of this incredible material.
We have partnered with Senini, Europe’s leading manufacturer of hempcrete blocks, to bring you extremely high quality and affordable blocks that contain only hydrated lime and hemp shiv. They are the most natural hempcrete blocks available.
As well as having the backing and know-how of Senini behind us, our Technical Director William Stanwix, has over 12 years of experience designing, building and manufacturing with hempcrete and is co-author of The Hempcrete Book.
In recent years, the construction industry has been undergoing a significant shift towards sustainable and eco-friendly practices. One emerging solution that has gained attention is the use of hemp blocks in building construction. Hemp blocks, made from the versatile and renewable hemp plant, offer numerous benefits that go beyond traditional construction materials.
Explore the advantages of building with hemp blocks and why it is an excellent choice for environmentally conscious construction.
Why is Hemp Good for Building?
Hemp possesses several qualities that make it an ideal material for sustainable building:
Strength and Durability: Hemp fibres are strong and durable, allowing hemp blocks to provide structural stability and withstand the test of time. Buildings constructed with hemp blocks have the potential for long-lasting performance and reduced maintenance costs.
Breathability: Hemp blocks have a breathable nature, allowing moisture to pass through the walls and preventing the build up of condensation. This breathability helps maintain a healthy indoor environment by reducing the risk of mould growth and supporting better air quality.
Carbon Sequestration: Hemp plants absorb and store a significant amount of carbon dioxide during their growth. When used in construction, hemp blocks effectively lock in carbon, acting as a carbon sink and helping mitigate the impact of greenhouse gas emissions.
What are the Benefits of Hemp Blocks?
Hemp blocks offer a wide range of advantages that contribute to sustainable building practices. Here are some key benefits:
Sustainability: Hemp is a highly sustainable crop, requiring minimal pesticides and herbicides for cultivation. It grows quickly and absorbs a significant amount of carbon dioxide during its growth cycle. By using hemp blocks, builders can reduce the carbon footprint of construction projects.
Thermal Efficiency: Hemp blocks have excellent thermal properties, providing superior insulation compared to traditional building materials. The porous structure of hemp blocks allows for effective regulation of temperature and humidity, leading to energy-efficient buildings with reduced heating and cooling needs.
Fire and Pest Resistance: Hemp blocks exhibit exceptional fire resistance, making them a safer alternative in construction. Additionally, the natural properties of hemp make it resistant to pests and mould, reducing the need for chemical treatments and enhancing the durability of structures.
Acoustic Performance: The density of hemp blocks contributes to excellent acoustic insulation, minimizing noise transfer between rooms and creating a more comfortable living or working environment.
Are Hemp Blocks Better than Concrete?
Compared to traditional concrete construction, hemp blocks offer distinct advantages:
Environmental Impact: Concrete production is a major contributor to carbon emissions, while hemp blocks have a significantly lower carbon footprint. By choosing hemp blocks, builders can contribute to reducing the environmental impact of construction projects.
Thermal Performance: Hemp blocks provide better insulation and thermal performance compared to concrete, resulting in energy-efficient buildings with lower heating and cooling costs.
Ease of Construction: Hemp blocks are lightweight and easy to handle, simplifying the construction process. They can be cut, shaped, and assembled using standard construction techniques, making them a practical choice for builders.
